4 Myths About ERP - DEBUNKED!

You know the reasons to get an ERP to run your business, but are plagued with the common fears of all businesses when selecting the right one for your needs.  I'm here to tell you that you're wrong!

All ERP Systems are Expensive

Of course this is the most easily proven belief when it comes to choosing an ERP system.  You don't have to look very long before you find that ALL of the top brands in the ERP game are going to cost you a large portion of your revenue to implement and maintain.  For this reason it makes getting an ERP almost impossible for most businesses, and for small businesses trying to stay on top of things it could be "the nail in the coffin".

But why do all of the top brands in the ERP market charging so much for their solution?  Are they worth it?  The simplest answer is, they have a Name that you brag about.  "I'm in charge of company X and I use SAP to run my business!"  You paid for those bragging rights.  What else do you get for your money?  Certainly NOT ease of use.  The major brands don't make their ERP's simple for you to use, in fact they are harder to use so that they can keep their long line of consultants employed.

Not all ERP are expensive, so it is a myth that "All ERP systems are Expensive".  This can be seen by the many Free and open source ERP systems out on the market now.  Don't be misled, as these can also get very expensive when you consider the complications involved with setting it all up and using it.  Many times you will require a consultant, and a contract with the company providing the Free ERP, in order to get support.

All ERP Systems are Complicated

You wouldn't be wrong to think this.  The number of ERP systems on the market currently is almost innumerable, and they are very complicated.  Many times they require a college student who majored in the specific ERP you want to use.  This means that the person who is to operate, maintain and support your ERP is not going to be cheap.  You are not going to be able to do it on your own, and you will need carefully trained staff to make sure nothing goes wrong.  You will need to pay the ERP developer for training, and will need to pay for their support package.  This is complicated!

Not all ERP systems are complicated, and it isn't easy to find the ones that are not complicated, since there are very few out that are simple.  And in business, you need to keep it SIMPLE.  Simple is the best way to keep costs down, and to ensure that your team won't have issues using the system.  And you won't need a whole other staff dedicated to maintaining and supporting the system.

All ERP Systems Require a Consultant

This is a mind boggling concept.  The idea that you MUST hire a consultant to properly setup, configure, and use an ERP system.  It is just not the case!  Why double the cost of your ERP by hiring a consultant?  Well it is simple, you buy the Big Brand ERP and you are REQUIRED to buy a consultant too.  That is an additional $60-$80,000 annual commitment on top of the $100,000+ commitment to the ERP developer.  If you're into burning your revenue, then this is for you!  There is a better choice, and it's not hard to see.

All ERP Systems Save your Business Money

It is true that an ERP system give you better control over the business finances and expenses, and can save you money in those areas.  But is the money really saved if it is redirected to the cost of running your ERP system?  Does it make sense to have the visibility, if the money you save is paying for the tool that is giving you that visibility?  It is one of the smartest choices you will ever make as a business owner, to get an ERP system.  Don't let it also be one of the worst!  When you buy the ERP system they will want you to sign a long term contract, that is because they know you're going to want out when you realize the savings is not relevant, since it is paying for their system.  But not all ERP systems use the money that they save your business to fund themselves.

The Clear Choice

In this post we have described the painful truth about choosing an ERP system.  It just isn't as easy, and cost effective as the market wants you to believe it to be.  The good news is that you do have a choice when it comes to ERP.  There is an option that is:
